Valentine's Day - February 2024

During February San Clemente Military Family Outreach held a drawing for active duty couples (ranked E-6 and below) for an opportunity to win a gift card to Avilla's Mexican Cantina – Sweethearts Night out on the town!  Through a random drawing, 20 gift cards were awarded to the lucky couples.

Also, through our other relationships (the Rotary Club and others) we were able to give these couples a beautiful large box of Sees Candies and a Nothing Bundt Cake!

Baby Shower - January 2024

San Clemente Military Family Outreach loves our Mom’s (and Dad’s)-To-Be! BUT, before we can shower them with our love (and help them to get started as young parents with some necessities) there was a lot of advanced planning and preparation our event chair – Judy Franz – spearheads and coordinates with our beloved community of volunteers.

The Donations

The giving started at the Mary's Feast Celebration in early December when guests brought baby gifts and gift cards. Meanwhile, the community collected hundreds of items (large and small) through Christmas Giving Trees or Wish Lists.  Area churches included St. Andrew’s By the Sea (SABTS), St Clement's Episcopal, Our Savior's Lutheran, Our Lady of Fatima (Young Ladies Institute), Christ Lutheran and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. And, our friends from the Reata Glen retirement community, The American Legion Auxiliary Newport Harbor Post 291 and the San Juan Capistrano American Legion Post 721 donated a wide range of goodies!

The Layette Assembly

Fifteen volunteers gathered on a beautiful day prior to the event and assembled beautiful layettes - which are quilt-wrapped items for babies. Special thanks to the Surfside Quilters Guild for making 50 of these the beautiful quilts!

Event Preparation

Early morning before the event, volunteers arrive to prepare for the expectant Military Moms. We were truly blessed with a sunny, clear day for the outdoor event - and baby gifts galore - from pacifiers to Pack-n-Plays, thanks to the generosity of many churches, organizations, and caring individuals.

The Main Event – the Shower

SCMFO's Annual Baby Shower for expectant military moms was held drive-in style on Saturday, Jan, 28, at the SCMFO office location - in the SABTS parking lot. In attendance were 47 moms (and many daddies, plus "big" brothers and sisters) and 25 volunteers! Pastor Karl from SABTS blessed the layettes, and Pastor Juli from Christ Lutheran blessed the babies and families. Hoag Hospital delivered formula and diapers that went to each mom, along with diapers and wipes provided with the layettes.

Here's what a few of the 47 families "showered" that day had to say:

  • "We will never be able to put into words how thankful we are for this opportunity. Having 2 under 2 is a beautiful challenge and this shower gives us much needed relief." Nuckolls Family
  • "Thank you so much for this opportunity. Having recently relocated and being far away from family, I didn't think I would have a baby shower or any type of celebration for our first baby. Thank you for hosting events like this that make military families feel at home even when they're far from home." Warren Family
  • "In the entire time we have been in the military, our family back in Tennessee has not been able to visit much or be part of many of our family's milestones. So, thank you for making this milestone of having our baby boy such a fun and wonderful celebration! -- Orvis Family

From the bottom of our hearts, SCMFO thanks everyone in our community for continuing to

support this very special event!

December 2023 - Holiday Season

During the Holidays San Clemente Military Family Outreach enjoys a wide range of events. We kicked off the month with the Mary’s Feast Celebration and rolled on to a few other activities. SCMFO received a very sweet donation of 100 Boxes of handmade toffee. These treats were redirected to a Christmas celebration at the retirement community Reata Glenn for military families, to the military spouses and clergy in attendance at the Mary’s Feast Celebration and to several families at the north end of Camp Pendleton.

Thank a Family December 2023 Thank a Family December 2023

Additionally, SCMFO launched the Thank-A-Family program where members of the community became sponsors to a Military Family (E-6 and below) for the purpose of enhancing their Christmas celebration! The sponsors reached out to the families to consider their needs and wants for Christmas – for which the sponsor fulfilled the needs. The results from this ranged between Trips to Disneyland (a family dream) to some of the more typical “wake up in the morning and under the tree is..." items.

December 5, 2023 - Mary's Feast Celebration

SCMFO’s the return of the Mary’s Feast Celebration held at the San Juan Hills Golf Club on December 5th was a heart-warming, joy-filled evening for those who were in attendance (approximately 120).   Not only was the enthusiasm off the charts “incredible’, but there seemed to have been a lot of pent-up energy around being able to participate and attend the event again.

Upon arrival and check in the guests were able to take a quick peak at the Silent Auction in progress…

Mary's Feast 2023 Mary's Feast 2023

Many made their next stop to drop off their “gifts for the baby Jesus.”  These donations add to others given to SCMFO for the Moms-to-Be at SCMFO’s Annual Baby Shower in January.  The 50 ladies (give or take) represent many deserving military families on Camp Pendleton ranks E-6 and below.

Mary's Feast 2023 Mary's Feast 2023

With a brief series of welcomes and introductions, one of the highlights of the evening was a retelling of the history Mary’s Feast by Event Chairperson, Chris McCann and a reminder  that the Mission of, and net revenue from, the celebration are directed towards support for the students and teachers at San Onofre School.

We shared a delicious meal together with friends, honoring military wives as our guests for the evening (whose dinner, travel and beverages were sponsored by Knights of Columbus Council #3772, American Legion Auxiliary #291 and several generous individuals).  Dessert consisted of four awesome chocolates donated by Schwartz’s Chocolates.

Concurrently, the bidding on the 25 auction items continued – fun to watch people secret out to make a bid they hoped would gleam their possible new treasure.

Mary's Feast 2023

Another major highlight to this year’s event was the opportunity to have our military spouse guests introduce themselves and to hear several of them tell their stories; including how their lives and the lives of their families have been touched by SCMFO.

Unscheduled and dramatic the Exalted Ruler - Gabriel Flores and Sue of the SC Elk's Lodge - appeared and made a significant donation to SCMFO directed at the Mary’s Feast Celebrations Mission.

Mary's Feast 2023 We were also blessed by a performance by the San Clemente High School Madrigals.

In attendance at the event was Clergy from several churches in the community whom support this celebration.  Each of them provided a message, as included in our printed program, as well as offering prayers throughout the evening over the donated baby shower items, event attendees, the meal and our departure into the chilly evening. Mary's Feast 2023

I want to offer everyone who attended the event, sponsored, donated or was part of the planning team a personal huge thank you to each of you for making this Mary’s Feast the most impactful, emotional and rewarding event.  It is an honor and a blessing to be leading this event and I’d like to that the Team for their hard work, contributions and results:  Kathy Godbout,  Kathy Butler, Anjie Martinis, Katy Nichol, Anne Boicy,  Judy Franz, Laura Pephens and Karen Rottmann.

November 28th - Giving Tuesday

This year we’re participating in Giving Tuesday! That’s right following Black Friday and Cyber Monday! What better way to start getting into the holiday giving-back spirit?  This day is meant to encourage people to give back to their community and contribute to making the world a better place.

We’d love if you participated with us.  A specifically appropriate way to do this is by helping support military families in need who serve us year round.  And, the best way to do that is to share our mission (hopefully with everyone you know) and to join millions of global givers on November 28th by making a donation.

For a debit / credit card donation click here:

November 20, 2023 – Annual Thanksgiving Meal Giveaway

SCMFO Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway 2023 SCMFO Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway 2023

On Monday, November 20th - like every year for the past 11 years - SCMFO helped Military Families celebrate Thanksgiving Day!  1,000 Thanksgiving meals were provided for military families ranked E-9 and below.  This year’s meal giveaway items for each family included:  A 14-16 lb. Turkey (of course), Cranberry Sauce, Creamy Mashed Potatoes mix and Turkey Gravy, Turkey Stuffing mix and a choice of Pumpkin or Apple Pie.  We served over 900 families and approximately 5 units (lot's of hungry marines)!

SCMFO Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway 2023 SCMFO Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway 2023 SCMFO Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway 2023

The giveaway was at the north end of the base at Camp Pendleton between the Basilone Road Commissary and the Sonic Drive-in…can you believe this all happened in less than 2 hours?  Well, thanks to over 100 people of the following volunteer groups it did!

  • Several Boy Scout Troops
  • Teachers and others from the San Onofre School
  • Active Duty personnel, and
  • SCMFO’s regular volunteers from the community

Thank you everyone for helping us to make this best-in-class event happen again in 2023, including the individuals and organizations (The Heritage of San Clemente Foundation / San Clemente Proud and the Samueli Foundation, etc.) that underwrote a portion of the costs of the event.

October 2023 Annual Salute to Military Heroes Week

Annual Salute to Military Heroes Week

Just prior to the Marine Corps Birthday and Veteran’s Day, SCMFO kicked off its week of festivities! The Annual Salute to Military Heroes Fundraising Week began with our very extraordinary Virtual Auction where on-line bidding wars ensued between October 22nd and 27th!  Then on October 28th SCMFO hosted its annual “Salute to Military Stars” luncheon event on base at Camp Pendleton at the Pacific Views Event Center.   Members of the community were invited to attend an afternoon where many engaging activities created memories for all!

SCMFO surpassed its fundraising goal for the Salute to Military Heroes Week, with many thanks to those made that happen (see our list at the end of this page).

For the first time ever San Clemente Military Family Outreach’s Annual Salute to Military Stars event was on Base at Camp Pendleton; the Pomp and Circumstance associated with our proud Military men and women was the center of attention.  Our guests had an opportunity to get their picture in front of a beautiful wall mural of the Raising of the Flag on Iwo Jima.  As guests checked in at the registration desk they proceeded down the hallway they could stop to read the names of the many Sponsors who help support SCMFO (see below).

Celebrating our 21st year was an event to remember as guests gathered on the pavilion to socialize and enjoy delicious appetizers and a beverage as the Marine Corp Band played patriotic tunes.

Guests were ushered indoors for the commencement of the program as the USMC Band played “When the Saints Come Marching In”.  Next was the USMC Color Guards with the  solemn Presentation of Colors by the impeccability dressed young Marines, reminding all of us what our American Flag represents and all those who have fought for our freedom.

Judy Franz , SCMFO President & Auction Chair, welcomed our guests, honored our Military and our Veterans, thanked our Sponsors and gave a rousing champagne toast.

Dave Mauerman, SCMFO Vice President & MC enlightened our guests with the history of SCMFO.  Many had no idea it all started in 2002 as Friends of San Onofre Marines (“FOSOM”) by Marine Lt. Col. William McReynolds and his wife, Sidonia, who had retired to San Clemente and saw a great need to provide emergency assistance to low income families in north Camp Pendleton.  We sadly recognize today that our name has changed but the needs have not.

Patriotic flower arrangements adorned the tables on the pavilion as well as the Seaview luncheon room where a delicious lunch of salad, champagne chicken and sides and the all American Apple pie was consumed. SCMFO October 2023 Annual Salute to Military Heroes Fundraising Week

SCMFO October 2023 Annual Salute to Military Heroes Fundraising Week Our keynote speaker Colonel David B. Moore, Commanding Officer, MCAS Camp Pendleton, gave a commanding presentation.  He spoke about the importance of recruiting and retaining troops for a rapidly changing technological military and the hardships Military Families experience.  He recognized and thanked SCMFO for all we do to help these enlisted families when they don’t know where to turn.  He also coined a new acronym for SCMFO “SKIM-FO” (typical Military Brass) and we will long remember his words and his new tag line for us.

There were so many highlights to the program but the most touching and revealing was the testimonials from five Marines who reached out to SCMFO in their time of need.  They each spoke eloquently from the heart to share just how difficult it was to ask for help and how thankful they were that we could help them.  Several commented that being a Marine meant they should always be able to take care of themselves and their family no matter what and admitting they needed help was a sign of failure.  We hope and trust they no longer believe they failed and that they will remember their struggles and will reach out to others who may be experiencing similar issues and refer them to SCMFO.
